Unusual Combination of a U.S. Divers “Sea Hawk” Divers Knife and Sheffield Sharpening Rod in a Custom made Leather Sheath

Here on offer is an unusual combination of a U.S. Divers “Sea Hawk” divers’ knife and Sheffield sharpening steel in a custom made leather sheath.

I was told that an ex-diver had adapted this diving knife, for use as a hunting/skinning knife, complete with a sharpening rod and handmade leather sheath.

Now, the American knife manufacturer, “U.S. Divers” (Aqua-Lung), made popular knives such as the Vulcan and Seahawk models. These were used by early recreational scuba divers, commercial divers, and military personnel during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.

The U.S. Divers Sea Hawk (also branded as Aqua-Lung Sea Hawk) is a classic, heavy-duty vintage scuba diving knife first introduced around 1969 and produced through the to the early 1980s.

The knife features an 8” stainless steel clip point blade stamped with 1” to 6” measurement increments along one side of the blade. It is also stamped on the other side with:

STAINLESS
STEEL

It has a serrated spine for half of its length and the whole blade is in excellent condition with just some scratch/usage marks that may polish out.

The thick crossguard appears to be made from polished aluminium.

It has a heavy metal knurled pommel/head designed to be used as a mallet or to bang on scuba tanks to signal other divers.

The finger grip shaped grip is made from a strong black rubber material and has raised lettering on both sides, that reads:
SEA HAWK

Accompanying the knife is a 7.5” vintage Sheffield forged steel sharpening rod or steel.

It features a slim, tapering steel rod with a spiralling file grooved finish and it is stamped on the edge with:

FORGED STEEL
SHEFFIEDL ENGLAND

At the top it is fitted with a lanyard ring that allows the steel to be attached to a belt, harness, or string so trappers and hunters could carry it easily in the field.

This example is also in excellent condition, but does now have some dark age staining to the finish.

Both these pieces fit into compartments within a custom made thick brown leather stitched and riveted sheath.

On the front at the top, it has been marked with the words:

POAEA
J L J SMITH

One assumes J Smith was the previous owner, but I can’t identify what the POAEA means?

On the back it has two large leather belt loops.

It is in great condition, with some rust pitting to the finish of the rivets.

This interesting set can still be used today as well as being a vintage collector’s piece!

The knife blade measures 8” (20.3cm) and the whole knife is 12.5” (31.8cm) long.

The sharpening rod is 7.5” (19cm) long and 0.45” (1.2cm) diameter.

Both pieces with the sheath weigh a heavy 765g.
