Antique Rencong Dagger from Sumatra Indonesia with 3.25” Blade and Carved Dark Horn Grip and Sheath

Here on offer is a traditional Rencong dagger from Sumatra, Indonesia with a 3.25” steel blade and carved water buffalo horn grip and sheath.

The Rencong dagger is instantly recognizable by its distinct L-shaped silhouette, featuring a sharp blade with a slightly convex back and a prominent pistol-like grip. It is historically
associated with Aceh and Sumatra, in northern Indonesia.

This smaller example has a 3.25” single-edged, pointed steel blade with a slightly curved spine. The blade has a sharp cutting edge with a small nick towards the grip. It has some light scratch marks and dark age staining to the finish.

The pistol shaped grip and sheath are carved from dark water buffalo horn and feature traditional floral motifs, with perforations, characteristic of Southeast Asian ethnographic weapons. The grip and sheath are in excellent condition without any splits or cracks.

These knives are hard to accurately date, but similar antique examples in museum collections like the Metropolitan Museum of Art typically date from the 18th to 19th century, though traditional craft production continued into the 20th century.

The blade measures 3.25” (8.3cm) and inserted in the sheath, the whole knife is 6.5” (16.5cm) long.

It weighs 25g.
