Commemorative Victorian British & Foreign Sailors' Society – Duke of Clarence - HMS Bacchante - White Metal Medal c1892
Here on offer is a commemorative Victorian British & Foreign Sailors' Society Duke of Clarence - HMS Bacchante, white metal medal, circa 1892.
My understanding is this medal was sold to raise funds for the British & Foreign Sailors' Society and commemorates the death of the Duke of Clarence Albert Victor.
The obverse features the uniformed bust of the society's patron, the Duke of Clarence. It has the lettering:
BRITISH & FOREIGN SAILORS SOCIETY, PATRON 1892 DUKE OF CLARENCE K.G. (IN MEMORIAM)
On the reverse, it depicts a detailed sailing ship in full sail representing HMS Bacchante, with the dates 1882-92 and the religious inscriptions:
“SO HE BRINGETH THEM UNTO THEIR DESIRED HAVEN” and “JESUS SAVIOUR PILOT ME”.
HAVEN" "JESUS SAVIOUR PILOT ME"
BACCHANTE // 1882-92
The medal is in excellent condition with some minor loss of the plating on the raised areas.
Size: Approximately 37mm to 38mm in diameter (roughly 1.5 inches), weighing around 16.64 grams
It measures 1.5” (3.8cm) diameter and weighs 17g.
