WW1 US Remington M1917 Bayonet dated 1917 with Maxim Green Leather Scabbard by Jewell 1918

Here on offer is a fine example of a WW1 US Remington M1917 sword bayonet dated 1917 with a second pattern steel mounted green leather scabbard made by Jewell in 1918.

The M1917 bayonet made its debut in WW1, initially used by American soldiers on the Western Front.
Modelled after the British Pattern 1913 bayonet, which was derived from the Pattern 1907 bayonet, the M1917 featured a lengthy 17” blade.
While primarily intended for the M1917 rifle, it could also be used with all "trench" shotguns of the time.
Essentially a replica of the British P14 bayonet, the M1917 has twin cuts in the grip panels, which distinguished it from the P1907 bayonet in British service based solely on the height of the muzzle ring.

This bayonet features a steel pommel with working release button and rifle slot.

The grip is made up of two oak or dark walnut scales that are secured by two slot-headed bolts and slotted round nuts.

The steel crossguard has a rounded tip and muzzle ring.

It has a mint 17” blued blade with a full length fuller on both sides and a sharp tip.

On one side of the ricasso it is clearly stamped with:

REMINGTON inside a circle and 1917

On the other side it is stamped with:

US with the Ordnance Department marks, being a Flaming Grenade and Eagle's Head along with the number 30.

The leather scabbard is the second pattern scabbard, where the M1910 belt hanger is integrated with the top metal mount. As this example was used in U.S. service, the leather scabbard body is painted green. On the back it is stamped with JEWELL 1918, indicating it was manufactured by the Jewell Belting Co. of Hartford, CT, in 1918.

The upper metal mount and chape are stapled in place and are stamped with M.S., which probably denotes the inspector's mark.

This bayonet and scabbard are in near mint condition with very minor age related wear and tear.

This is the best example I have ever had the pleasure to own.

The blade measures 17.1” (43.5cm) long and the bayonet is 22” (55.8cm) in total length.

Inserted in the scabbard it measures 23” (58.4cm) long.

It weighs 710g.
