Vintage Royal Navy Mechanical Engineers Senior Officers LOTT Trophy Wooden Award Shield for Tile Competition 1972 to 1978

Here on offer is an interesting Royal Navy Mechanical Engineers, Senior officers LOTT Trophy wooden award shield, for the Tile Competition between 1972 and 1978.

The wooden shield shaped plaque is titled:

SENIOR OFFICERS - LOTT TROPHY – TILE COMPETITION

It features central crossed metal emblems of a spanner in aluminium and a 303 rifle in brass.

Around the edge are eleven small metal shields that are pinned in place, with seven of them being engraved with the winners of the Tile Competition for that year, starting in 1972 and finishing in 1978. HMS Raleigh won every year apart from 1973 when HMS Thunderer where the winners.

HMS Raleigh is a shore establishment serving as the basic training facility of the Royal Navy at Torpoint in Cornwall. Its principal function is the delivery of both New Entry Training and Basic Training.

HMS Thunderer was opened in 1946 as a shore establishment based at Manadon in Plymouth. It that served as the premier training facility for engineering officers within the Royal Navy. It provided advanced education in mechanical, marine, and weapons systems engineering until its closure in 1995

On the back of the shield it has a hinged support stand and possibly a museum reference number “P15146” in green Dymo.

The Lott Trophy or Lott Awards stem from the Herbert Lott Naval Trust Fund, established in 1928 by a London Stock Exchange member.

It was created to reward "marked efficiency" and practical innovations that improve the performance, appliances, or weaponry of the Naval Service.

In British military tradition, a Tile Competition is a highly competitive, fast-paced shooting match.

Teams of shooters (often organized by division, ship, or rank—such as a Senior Officers' or Officers' Mess team) line up at a range (typically 200 yards).

The Objective is that each team is assigned a row of physical clay or ceramic tiles. On the command to fire, they must rapidly shoot and smash all of their tiles before the opposing team smashes theirs. It tests raw speed, accuracy, and coordination under extreme time pressure.

While the Herbert Lott Fund primarily focuses on engineering innovation and operational efficiency, it historically provided funding and prizes for excellence in marksmanship.

This unique award shield is in excellent condition, with just a few dings to the edges, It will make a great addition to nay Royal Navy collection and displays really well.

The shield measures 8.5” (21.6cm) wide and 9” (23cm) high. Each small metal shield is about 0.8” (2cm) by 0.75” (1.9cm).

It weighs 580g.
