WW2 British Army 2-Piece Jack Knife by Francis Greaves & Sons Sheffield dated 1940

Here on offer is a WW2 British Army 2- piece jack knife by Francis Greaves & Sons of Sheffield, dated to 1940.

Francis Greaves & Sons, operating from the Radford Works in Sheffield, England, was an established cutler contracted by the British government to supply clasp knives, forks, and spoons for the armed forces during the wartime era. Wartime production models by F. Greaves & Sons were famously manufactured both with and without a marlinspike. Omitting the spike—traditionally used on ships for untying tight rope knots—helped simplify manufacturing, conserve crucial metal, and speed up production to meet intense military demand

This example is the less common type, that was made for the British Army, without the marlinspike.

It has a single 2.75” sheepsfoot blade that is stamped on the ricasso with the makers details:

The steel blade has been well used and has lost some blade edge through years of sharpening. It now has some rust pitting and greying to the finish.

It also has a sharp tipped can opener, that is stamped on one side with a Broad Arrow and the year date 1940.

When both tools are closed into the grip, it shows the fixed flat headed screwdriver.

The grip plates are made from chequered Bakelite grip plates and are in excellent condition with no cracks or damage.

At the end is a large copper swivel lanyard bail loop.

Both of the folding tools are tight and still snap open and shut with no wobble.

The blade cutting edge measures 2.4” (6cm) long and the knife when closed is 3.75” (9.5cm) long, excluding the lanyard ring.

It weighs 125g.
