Scarce Antique Pocket Budding Knife with Oak Grip by SAYNOR COOKE & RIDAL c1880

Here on offer is a scarce antique pocket budding knife with oak grip scales, by SAYNOR COOKE & RIDAL, circa 1880.

SAYNOR are known for making top quality pruning knives, making them very collectable and in high demand.

It has a 2.75” carbon steel, single-bevel budding blade, that still retains a sharp cutting edge. It retains a strong spring action, being very stiff to open and it “snaps” shut, with no wobble.

On the front of the blade, it is stamped with the maker’s name:

SAYNOR

Then on the ricasso it is marked:

SAYNOR
COOKE &
RIDAL

Then on the other side, it is marked:

OBTAIN
SHEFFIELD
ENGLAND

Samuel Saynor was granted the trademark "OBTAIN" in 1783 and was one of a number used by this Sheffield maker.

The blade shows some light aged “greying/staining” and fine scratch marks to the blade finish, but I think this would clean up a bit brighter, if that is your preference.

The smooth grip fits perfectly in your hand and is made up of two slices of dark oak wood that have been shaped to form a tight fit to the steel blade liners, being held in place by steel pins.

This example will make a great addition to any antique knife collection and will only increase in value.

The blade measures 2.75” (7cm) with a 2.4” (6cm) cutting edge. When closed it measures 3.4” (8.6cm).

It weighs 43g.
