Rare Dutch M4 Bayonet (2nd Model) made by E & F Hörster with “Wood Grain” effect M8A1 Type Sheath c1952

Here on offer is a rare example of a Dutch M4 bayonet (2nd Model) made by E & F Hörster in Solingen, Germany, with a “Wood Grain” effect M8A1 type sheath, circa 1952.

In the 1950s, the Dutch M4 bayonet was the standard issue bayonet for the M1 Carbine within the Netherlands Armed Forces. Although based on the American model, the Dutch variant was manufactured for the Dutch military in Germany by the famous E&F Hörster in 1951-1952. These E&F Hörster made bayonets and scabbards are simply the best of all M4s ever produced by any country. These are identifiable by a stamped "H" inside an oval on the crossguard, as shown on this example.

The Dutch versions have several unique characteristics that make it highly sought after by collectors.

Unlike the American leather grips, the Dutch version features grip scales made of dark red or maroon plastic (phenolic resin).

There were three variations made:

1st Model: Features dark red/maroon plastic grip scales secured by brass/copper rivets.

2nd Model: Features the same maroon plastic grips, but the rivets are replaced by slotted screw bolts and nuts for easier disassembly and stronger hold. Many 1st Models were later sent back to arsenals to have their rivets replaced with screws.

3rd Model: Identical to the 2nd model in using screw-attached grips, but manufactured with a smooth crossguard that lacks the exposed assembly rivets found on the crossguards of the first two types.

Therefore, as this example still has the raised crossguard rivet heads, it is a 2nd Model.
The steel blade has a raised central rib and single edge with a false edge top section.

The steel crossguard has the barrel ring and is stamped with the famous E&F Hörster maker’s mark.

The dark red plastic grip scales are in excellent condition held in place by screws bolts and nuts.

The steel pommel has a small rifle slot with a fully working release mechanism.

The scabbard is similar to the US-made M8A1, but the metal throat is blued. The scabbard’s body is made of Durofol, a laminated wood developed in Germany during WW2. Durofol is made by impregnating beech wood veneers of 0.2 to 0.3 mm thickness with 25-35% of a water-soluble phenolic resin cured under both high pressure and temperature.

It retains its original green web hanger and retaining strap and has a good long leather leg strap attached to the tip.

His bayonet has seen some service but is in overall excellent condition. The blade shows signs of dark age staining but no rust and still holds a good cutting edge.

The blade measures 6.75” (17.2cm) and the whole bayonet is 11.6” (29.5cm) long.

It weighs 450g.
