Antique Pruning Knife with Hawksbill Blade and Stag Antler Grip by SAYNOR c1890

Here on offer is an antique pruning knife with a large hawksbill blade and stag antler grip plates by SAYNOR, circa c1890.

SAYNOR are known for making top quality pruning knives, making them very collectable and in high demand.

The condition of this example is not mint and I would say it has been stored where the bolsters have become damp at some point during its life. This has meant that both of the steel bolsters show signs of surface pitting and an area of the steel liner attached to the bolster has become rusted. This has resulted in the area between the liner and the tip of the stag grip plate expanded over time and now the plate is slightly raised but not damaged, with all the pins still in place. The rust is no longer a problem as it was dry and easily removed.

The large curved hawksbill shaped steel blade is in great condition and maintains its original sharp edge, looking to have hardly been used. Many of this type of pruning knife have had their blades sharpened some much they have lost the curve!

One side of the blade is clearly stamped with the maker’s name:

Then on the ricasso it is stamped:

Both sides of the blade show some aged “greying/staining” and one side has some signs of pitting.

The blade opens and closes well, with a strong spring action and locks firmly into place with no wobble.

The curved grip fits perfectly in your hand and is made up of two slices of fine stag antler that have been shaped to form a tight fit to the steel blade liners, being held in place with steel pins. They now have a dark age patina, that has formed over the years.

They are in excellent condition and complete, with just a tiny hairline crack on one side by the top steel pin.

The grip is finished with a steel bolster at one end, that is now pitted and a flat brass cap at the other.

This example will make a great addition to any antique knife collection and will only increase in value.

The curved blade measures about 3.5” (8.8cm) with a 2.8” (7.3cm) cutting edge. When closed the grip measures 4.7” (12cm).

It weighs 150g.
