Victorian Silver Owl Cheroot Cutter with Glass Eyes c1890

Here on offer is beautiful example of a Victorian owl with glass eyes, silver and steel fob cheroot cutter, circa 1890.

Both side panels of the cutter are made from sterling silver and depicts the front and back of an owl in fine detailing, including cute coloured glass eyes.

The silver owl side plates are securely fitted to the central steel body. The “V” cutter and its arm mechanism are also made from steel and now show some age darkening to the finish. The arm is stamped with what appears to be a maker’s mark, being a circle with four spiralling arrows, which I can’t identify. I have seen another such example that had the maker’s mark for William Harrison, of Birmingham, so this may possibly by him as well?

It also has a loop and ring attached to the top so that it can be attached to a pocket watch chain.

The “V” cutter is operated by moving the loop to one side, to open the arm, then you can cut the cheroot at its base and the cutter slots back into the main body.

This is an unusual and rare example which I would date it to the later part of the 19th century, circa 1890.

It measures 2” (5.1cm) long (excluding the ring) and weighs 16g.
