Unique WW2 Period German “Trench Art” Swastika Miniature Sword Letter Opener

Here on offer is a WW2 period German “trench art” letter opener, made in the form of a miniature sword, that displays a Swastika.

This letter opener has been made in the form of an antique sword with a “D” hand guard.

It has a thin pointed 9” steel blade that now shows dark age staining to the finish.

The grip has been made using a tapering cylindrical plated brass component, possibly from an aircraft or engine, with some markings on both sides, that are hard to make out, but look like A.I.D and PAT. 940/10.

The “D” guard has been skilfully made from some thin aluminium, that has large cutouts and pierced stars on the upper and lower curved sections. There is some light engraving on the front of the guard and on the upper section is a reversed Swastika. However, the main feature is an impressive raised copper Swastika that is fitted on the front.

There was no provenance with this piece, so I can only speculate that it was most likely made by WW2 German engineers during “down time” on one of the many maintenance and repair bases the German military operated during WW2.

It is rare to find such WW2 German made “trench art” and clearly this piece is unique, making it highly collectable.

The letter opener overall is in excellent condition with just a crease/crack in the aluminium by one of the stars on the upper section and the blade would most likely clean-up to a bright finish with the application of some metal polish, it so required.

The blade measures 9” (22.8cm) long and the whole sword letter opener measures 12.5” (31.8cm).

It weighs 60g.
