Late Victorian Brass and MOP Cheroot “V” Cutter Multi-tool with Knife and Fork c1880

Here on offer is a fine example of a Victorian brass and (MOP) mother of pearl cigar/cheroot “V” cutter multi-tool with a knife and fork.

This type of antique cheroot multi-tool represents a highly specialised category of late 19th century smoking multi-tools. Cheroots are small, open-ended cigars that became popular in the Victorian era. Smokers carried compact multi-functional tools like this fine example, to prepare and hold their tobacco.
They were often made of sterling silver, nickel silver or brass with bone or mother of pearl scales.,

A cigar/cheroot “V” cutter is perhaps the most important accessory that any cigar aficionado could buy. This is the least harmful way of cutting a cigar/cheroot, by actually cutting a small “V” shape in the end of a cigar instead of snipping or punching a hole.

This multi-tool version also has a small folding knife that could be used for removing labels and wrappings.

Then it has a small folding two pronged mini-fork that serves as a "cheroot holder" or "nubber." It holds the tiny, hot tobacco nub when it becomes too short to hold by hand, avoiding burnt fingers.

The main body is made from brass with beautiful smooth mother of pearl scales. The knife, fork and “V” cutter are made from steel and now show some age darkening to the finish. It also has a ring attached to the top so that it can be attached to a pocket watch chain.

To operate it, you gently press the brass button on the side and the cutter mechanism will spring out.

You can then use the “V” blade cutter by pressing the edge button down, to cut the tip of your cigar/cheroot and lock the cutter back into place.

This is an unusual and rare version and doesn’t have any makers marks on it, but I would date it to the later part of the 19th century, circa 1880.

It is in excellent working condition, with no damage just some age darkening to the steel items.

It measures 2” (5.1cm) long (excluding the ring) and weighs 22g.
