Rare Commemorative Centennial 1874 – 1974 MARTINDALE Letter Opener with the iconic "Crocodile" trademark

Here on offer is an unusual commemorative centennial 1874 – 1974 MARTINDALE, letter opener with the iconic "Crocodile" trademark.

I can’t find any record of these being made or any other examples being sold. I believe there was a celebratory dinner for the centenar and maybe they were given to the attendees, to mark the occasion?

The name Martindale most famously refers to Ralph Martindale, a historic British maker of high-carbon steel machetes and cutting tools since 1874 and their iconic "Crocodile" trademark registered in 1876.

They are well known for producing standard-issue bushcraft tools like the iconic Golok and Paratrooper machetes for the British Army for over 50 years.

This mint condition commemorative letter opener celebrates 100 years of Martindale production, from 1874 to 1974.

It has a xx” long single edged polished stainless-steel blade, with a slightly curved tip, that is in mint condition

On both sides it is finely etched with the famous “Crocodile” image and the words on either side:

TRADE MARK
CROCODILE

MARTINDALE
BIRMINGHAM

On one side it has the additional words:

CENTENARY YEAR
1974

and near the grip, STAINLESS.

The shaped grip scales are made from ivory coloured celluloid, that has a very smooth finish.

It is in mint condition and would make a great addition to any collection of Martindale knives and tools.

The letter opener measures 9.4” (24cm) long with a 6.5” (16.5cm) blade and it weighs 46g.
