Antique Carving Knife with 8” “Non Stain” Blade and Dark Rosewood Grip by George Butler of Sheffield c1920
Here on offer is a fine antique carving knife with an 8” “Non Stain” blade and dark rosewood grip, by George Butler of Sheffield, circa 1920
The "Non-Stain" stamp indicates an early formulation of stainless steel. It was highly marketed in the 1920s through the 1950s because it did not discolour or rust when exposed to acidic foods like meats and fruits.
George Butler & Co. was an esteemed Sheffield cutler established in the 18th century, widely recognized by their "Key" corporate trademark or the "Art" brand name.
The blade on this example is in excellent condition, no rust or pitting, just some scratch marks to the finish, near the cutting edge. It has been sharpened and has a very sharp edge.
On one side of the blade, it is stamped with the Butler trade mark and the words “NON-STAIN”.
The finely grained dark rosewood grip scales are held securely in place against the blades tang by three brass pins. It fits neatly against the brass bolster.
The whole knife measures 12.4” (31.5cm) long and has a 8” (20.3cm) blade.
It weighs 137g.
