Antique Yemini Jambiya Dagger with Horn Handle with Piqué Work and Leather Covered Sheath c1911

Here on offer is a fine example of genuine antique Yemini Jambiya dagger with horn handle with piqué work and a leather covered wooden sheath, circa 1911.

Curved daggers like these were most commonly presented in Yemeni ceremonies as a symbol of honour and manhood, but they were also worn by nomadic tribes, in order to provide protection against any potential danger.

This example has a traditionally shaped blond horn handle that has an applied pattern of silver Piqué work on the front, along with two brass coned studs that seem to show the image of a chariot and the year 1911. At the bottom of the grip it has a low grade silver band with some chased decoration.

The handle fits tightly to the double-edged curved steel blade that has a central ridge. The antique blade is actually in excellent condition, but does now show a lot of age staining to the finish. This would probably polish up to a brighter finish if so required.

The blade and wide ferrell fits tightly into the sheath, that is made of wood covered in tan leather that is stitched in place. There is also some raised decoration and thin black strapping on the front.

A Jambiya, also spelled janbiya, jambya, jambia and janbia, also known as a shibriyeh in the Levant, is a specific type of dagger with a short-curved blade with a central ridge that originated from the Hadhramaut Governorate region of Yemen. They have spread to other countries in the Middle East, to other countries in the Arab world, and to parts of South Asia and Southeast Asia.

This fine Jambiya dagger is actually excellent antique condition with no damage that I can see and it makes an impressive display piece.

It has a 9.5” (23.5cm) curved blade and the whole dagger measures 12.6” (32cm) long.
Inserted in the sheath, it measures approximately 13.5” (34.3cm) long.

It weighs 320g.
