Rare Antique Lacquered Bamboo Crook Handled Walking Stick with Concealed Blackjack or Metal Truncheon c1900

Here on offer is a fine example of an antique lacquered bamboo crook handled walking stick with concealed blackjack or truncheon, circa 1900.

I must say I just love this piece and it is the only example I have had the privilege to own.

This is a rare form of weaponized walk stick which would normally contain a sword or even a gun, but in this case, it conceals a blackjack or truncheon and seems to date to the late 1800’s or early 1900’s.

This blackjack is a powerful weapon, made using a strong coiled steel spring with a weighted cylindrical metal tip that looks to be made from plated brass. The base of the spring fits tightly into a plated metal tube, that has splits in the side to allow it to grip the inside of the bamboo scabbard. This also fits to the crook shaped curved handle.

The blackjack fits very snuggly into the bamboo scabbard, that has a steel collar and brass ferrule at the tip.

On the scabbard, you can make out the growth sections of the bamboo and the crook handle seems to have been made from a dark wood, that along with the scabbard have had a dark coating of lacquer applied when it was made. There is now some slight loss of that original lacquer to the scabbard as shown in my photos.

What I find impressive is the walking stick, just looks like a “normal” everyday walking stick as used by most men back in the late Victorian period. It conceals the weapon perfectly!

So, if you were attacked back in the Victorian era, one simply needed to remove the crook handle, that extracts the metal truncheon and it allows the user to strike, jab, block, or bludgeon his way to safety.

I can’t see any maker’s marks on it, but I feel it is probably by a European maker?

It is in excellent condition with just some minor loss of plating to the metal and loss of lacquer to the scabbard, but there are no cracks or splits to the bamboo.

This is a fine blackjack walking stick would make a great addition to any edged weapon collection.

The metal blackjack section measures 13.75” (35cm) and including the handle, measures 20” (50.8cm) long.

The whole walking stick measures 35” (89cm) long.

It weighs 500g.
