Antique Nickel Plated “Casket Ink” Travelling Inkwell by De La Rue & Co. Paris c1910

Here on offer is a scarce antique nickel plated “Casket Ink” travelling inkwell by De La Rue & Co., Paris, circa 1910.

The outer nickel plated casket case of this inkwell adds an extra layer of protection during travel. For use, the casket case also forms a stand to hold the inkwell in the upright position.

The inkwell is opened by pushing the button and releasing the sprung clip that holds the lid. The interior of the lid has a pad with hidden spring to push it tight against the neck of the glass ink bottle. The inner ink bottle is ingeniously secured, the seal spring is in working order, and the bottle is easily removed to clean or refill.

The casket case has a thin leather lining to provide a comfortable fit to the inkwell it holds.

Both the outer case and the inkwell are stamped with the company's name, the inkwell's title and that it was manufactured in Paris as well as the fact that De La Rue were based in both London and Paris.

Known for their early stationery and secure printing, Thomas De La Rue & Co. created these inkwells for Victorians and Edwardians on the move.

This clever design was highly prized for preventing spills in luggage and today, they are popular collector's items.

The inkwell and casket are in excellent condition with no damage, just some slight loss of plating caused by years of use.

The outer casket is 1.6” (4.2cm) wide by 2.2” (5.5cm) tall and 1” (2.5cm) deep.

It weighs 120g.
