Antique Victorian silver Cigar or Cheroot Cutter by James Alexander, Birmingham c1895
Here on offer is beautiful example of an antique Victorian silver cigar or cheroot cutter by James Alexander, Birmingham, circa 1895.
This cutter retains its original curved steel spring loaded blade, that still has excellent spring tension and is stamped on one side, “SHEFFIELD”. The blade also opens out so that it can be used as a small pen knife.
The main body has silver side plates that are engraved with foliate scroll decoration and on one side it has a vacant cartouche. On the other side it is stamped with the maker’s mark, being J.A W S S, that relates to the Birmingham silversmith James Alexander.
It also retains its original silver suspension ring.
It measures 1.6” (4.1cm) long, excluding the suspension ring and the blade is 1” (2.5cm) long.
It weighs 11.5g.
