Vintage 31” Long Twisted Willow Riding Whip with Nickel Silver End Cap and Short Leather Tongue c1950
Here on offer is a mint example of a vintage 31” long twisted willow riding whip with a nickel silver end cap and short leather tongue.
My understanding is that these whips have a long tradition of being made in Germany and this mint unused example was probably made in the 1950’s.
They are made by using a 4 or 5ft willow pole of 1” diameter, that is then tapered and split into four parts. An 8” end section is kept solid and will become the handle.
After rounding and smoothing, the parts are steamed and twisted together. A leather or twine keeper is tightly bound to the tip using waxed twine. A leather thong or lash is attached to the keeper to finish the traditional whip.
This mint condition example has been fitted with a short 2.5” stitched leather tongue. At the tip of the handle, it has been fitted with a nickel silver cap that has just a couple of tiny dings.
It measures 31” (78.7cm) long including the leather tongue and weighs 90g.
