Rare Antique Scissor Multitool with Quill Cutter Folding Blades and Leather Covered Case c1880

Here on offer is a rare antique scissor multitool with its sleeve cover and two quill cutter folding blades and leather covered case, circa 1880.

This antique scissor multitool has a design unlike any other. Rather than folding in the same plane as the scissor movement, the knife blades in each handle fold out perpendicular.

The scissors are made from carbon steel and are spring loaded, by means of a single flat spring between the handles (often seen broken or missing completely today).

When the scissor blades are in the closed position they can be held in that position by a nickel silver sleeve cover.
This sleeve cover is essential to allow the knife blades to be used practically, when the scissors are held closed, and also for ease of storing it inside the case. These sleeve covers are often lost to time, on most examples found today and are a rare find!

The handle scales are made from sections of tortoise shell and both are inset with a nickel silver escutcheon. One is vacant and one is engraved with what seems to be the name, “Martha”, who I assume was the owner. The scales are in excellent undamaged condition.

Each handle is in effect a small folding knife, complete with backspring for each blade.

I would say that the two small knives look like quill cutters, but interestingly, the two knife blades are slightly different, but both seem to have a lambfoot profile.

One of the blades measures 1.3" (3.3cm) long and the other is 1.2” (2.9cm).

They both appear to have a maker’s mark, a “Crown” stamped on the ricasso, but I can’t identify who the maker is?

It comes with a small red leather covered rectangular cardboard box, which has kept the scissors/knives safe over the years.

All the metal on this example is in excellent condition with just some slight age greying in areas. The nickel silver sleeve has some dents but no splits.

The scissor blades measure 1.2” (3cm) long and with both knife blades closed, the scissors measure 3.4” (8.6cm).

In the case they weigh 27g.
