WW2 British Army No.4 Mk. II Spike Bayonet by the Savage Stevens Co. USA with a Metal Scabbard
Here on offer is a WW2 British Army No.4 Mk. II spike bayonet by the Savage-Stevens Co. of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, USA with a No.4 MK. I metal scabbard.
These spike bayonets were made for the No. 4 Lee Enfield rifle, that was a refinement of the original No. I Mk. III SMLE. The original SMLE design was very sound. However, the No. 4 benefited from a heavier barrel and improved sights. First adopted in 1939, No. 4 rifles were manufactured in Britain, Canada, and the USA. They stayed in production post-war and saw front-line service well into the 1950s. Match rifles and sniper variants were subsequently chambered for the 7.62 x 51 mm NATO cartridge and saw continued service for many more years.
The No. 4 Mk. II bayonet was a simplified version of the Mk. I, eliminating the milling cuts required to create the cruciform blade flutes.
The No. 4 Mk. II was otherwise identical to the Mk. I, with the bayonet and socket one solid forging.
Three firms produced the No. 4 Mk. II: Singer in Scotland, the Savage Stevens Co. in the USA, and Long Branch in Canada.
The No. 4 Mk. II was, by far, the most numerous variants, with over 3.3 million units produced.
The Savage-Stevens Co. of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, made approximately 1.25 million No. 4 Mk. II bayonets during 1941 and 1942. These were provided to Britain under the Lend-Lease Act.
This bayonet is in excellent condition with minor surface pitting and is stamped at the socket end with the details:
N0.4 Mk. II
and the makers make being a squared-off “S”.
There is also a stamped “S” under the push release mechanism.
The bayonet is complete with its original No.4 Mk I metal scabbard, that is in great condition, with just some very minor surface dents and surface pitting.
The No. 4 Mk. I is the most commonly encountered scabbard, outnumbering all others combined. It has a tapered steel body with a ball finial. A drain hole in the finial, allows water to drain. A round frog stud is brazed to the body.
It is stamped around the top of the throat with:
No.4 MK1
The bayonet sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within.
This is an excellent example of the iconic British WW2 No.4 bayonet
The blade measures 8” (20.3cm) and inserted in the scabbard, the whole bayonet measures 10.25” (26cm) long.
It weighs 306g.
