Large Antique French Bronze Medal for Société Nationale d’Encouragement à l’Agriculture de la Dordogne with Original Silk Lined Case c1880
Here on offer is large antique French bronze medal for the Société Nationale d’Encouragement à l’Agriculture de la Dordogne with its original silk lined case, circa 1880.
These medals where awarded by the Dordogne Agricultural Promotion Society for contributions to farming, agricultural progress and rural development.
This example has probably not been issued as it remains in near mint condition, without a winner’s inscription and still retains its circular black leather covered and silk lined case.
On the obverse it depicts in relief, a bust of a woman facing right, of the Ceres type, with a headband and net holding her hair. Opposite her, three ears of wheat.
The inscription translates to read:
SOCIETY . FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT . OF . AGRICULTURE . OF . THE DORDOGNE
. PEACE . AND . WORK .
On the reverse it depicts a wreath of plants made up of ears of corn, ears of wheat and grapevines with bunches of grapes. All tied together with a band at the bottom.
The medal is in near mint condition with a nice patina to the finish.
It comes with its original round black leather covered silk lined case, with a lever catch on the front. The hinge works perfectly, but the case needs to be treated delicately, as it is now well over 100 years old.
This medal is a fine example for collectors of French medals, agriculture memorabilia, or bronze art medallions.
The medal measures about 2” (5.1cm) diameter and weighs 60g.
