Unusual British Royal Navy “Ropework Set” Consisting of a Deck Knife and Marlin Spike with a hard Buff Leather Sheath c1979

Here on offer is a scarce British Royal Navy “Ropework Set”, consisting of a deck knife and Marlin spike that fit into a hard buff leather sheath, circa 1979.

The deck or rope knife has a 1.5” wide and 5.25” single edged thin steel blade with rosewood grip scales that are held in place by five steel pins.

There is no maker that I can see on the blade as it has seen some service and now shows some darkening to the blade finish. A lot of this type of knife were made by J. NOWILL & SONS for the British military during the 1970’s and 80’s.

The heavy metal Marlin spike is 9” long and is stamped along the edge with a NATO reference number 910-5444 SF and an MOD broad arrow (crow’s foot) mark and the date of manufacture 1979.

It is in excellent condition and has also been fitted with a 23” long skilfully braided green cord lanyard.

Both of these fit snuggly into a really hard buff leather sheath that has been stitched and copper riveted together, to form the slots for the pieces.

Over the years the leather has now gone very hard and is almost translucent.

This is a really unusual set that I can’t find any other examples of, but with the military markings was clearly issued to the Royal Navy or a British marine unit?

The blade measures 5.25” (13.3cm) long and the complete knife is 10” (25.4cm) long. It weighs 118g.

The Marlin spike measures 9” (22.8cm) long and it weighs a heavy 405g.

The whole set weighs 620g.
