WW2 48th Canadian Highlanders Cap Badge with Tartan Backing Mounted on a Wooden Plaque – “B” Company 1941 with Extra Tartan Patch

Here on offer is an unusual WW2 48th Canadian Highlanders cap badge with an original tartan backing, that has been mounted on a handmade shield shaped wooden plaque, possibly made from oak?

The plaque has some writing in gold on it that reads as:

1941

B Coy. (B Company)

This is clearly a commemorative piece that relates to a soldier of the 48th Canadian Highlanders, B Company, for service or a battle during 1941.

During WW2, the 48th Highlanders of Canada, a Canadian infantry regiment, served with distinction. The regiment mobilized for war in September 1939, and its 1st Battalion landed in Sicily in July 1943 and Italy in September 1943 as part of the 1st Canadian Infantry Division. They later fought in North-West Europe in March 1945.

The silver alloy cap badge retains it red felt backing and has been mounted on an original regimental tartan patch as they used when wearing the cap badge on a beret or Tam O Shanter. Please see my last photo of soldiers wearing their Tam O Shanter’s.

The cap badge is in excellent condition and displays the regimental motto on the front:

DILEAS GU BRATH (Faithful Forever)

It retains both lugs and long pin on the back, that recure it to the plaque.

The tartan patch is now in poor condition with what looks like moth damage. I have left it as it is, being an authentic piece of 85 year old regimental tartan, most likely worn by the soldier at the time. I have also managed to source a new patch, of the correct regimental tartan, that are cut from damaged kilts or trews when they become available. The new patch is included with the badge, so could be used to replace the old tartan?

The wooden plaque measures 4.4” (11.3cm) by 5” (12.7cm) and the badge is 2” (5.2cm) diameter.

The plaque weighs 55g.

Please see my pictures for the details of the condition, which complement this description.
