WW2 British Military Authority 1 Shilling Note Series F circa 1942
Here on offer is a WW2 British Military Authority - 1 shilling note, series F.
The WW2 British Military Authority (BMA) 1 shilling note, Series F, was issued around Q2 1942, primarily for use in Tripolitania (Libya) during the North African campaign. These notes were part of the first series of BMA currency designed for British troops in occupied territories, featuring a brown, violet, and blue design with a lion and crown device. They were valid only for transactions within official military canteens and approved organizations in specific theaters.
These notes were issued by the British military during WW2 in North Africa, Italy, Greece and Yugoslavia and used between 1942 and 1947.
Series A, B, C, D, E, F and L were issued in Tripolitania.
Series K was issued in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.
Series R was issued in mainland Greece and the Dodecanese Islands.
Series S was issued in mainland Italy and Sicily.
Series X was issued in Yugoslavia.
In Tripolitania, these notes were exchanged for Italian lire at a rate of 400 lire = £1, whilst in Italy the rate was 480 lire = £1.
Those issued for use in Greece circulated alongside the new post-war drachma, at a rate of 600 new drachmai to 1 BMA pound, to help the Greek population trust the new drachma through its connection to a stable currency.
On the Dodecanese Islands, the BMA notes replaced the Italian lira at a rate of 400 lire = £1 in 1945. They circulated there until the end of the British administration in 1947, when they were replaced by drachma at a rate of £1 = 20,000 drachma.
This note is in well used condition and came inside a WW2 trench art made cigarette case.
It measures 4.5” (11.4cm) by 2.9” (7.3cm)
