Scarce German Badge Relating to the Wasserkuppe Mountain in Rhön the "Birthplace of Gliding" c1930

Here on offer is a scare German commemorative souvenir or award badge relating to the Wasserkuppe Mountain in the Rhön region of Germany, that is known as the "Birthplace of Gliding", circa 1930.

The badge is made from plastic and the upper part depicts the famous Aviator Memorial (Fliegerdenkmal) located on the Wasserkuppe. It features a bronze eagle perched atop a basalt rock pedestal. The monument was originally erected in 1923 to honour pilots who fell in WW1.
It has a scroll at the base, that reads:
"WASSERKUPPE/RHÖN," identifying the specific mountain in, Germany.

Suspended below is a hanging charm being a model of a sailplane or glider, representing the mountain's significant history as a pioneer site for motorless flight.

Beginning in the early 20th century, the Wasserkuppe became a world-renowned center for gliding. It hosted the first major gliding competitions and was later used by the NSFK (National Socialist Flyers Corps) for pilot training during the 1930s and 40s. While similar badges were produced as official awards for events like the 1940 International Air Race, this specific design-a detailed miniature of the memorial with a hanging glider-is often found as a high-quality historical souvenir for visitors and participants of the "Mountain of Aviators".

The badge is in excellent condition and still retains it fixing bar and “C” clip on the back.

It measures 2.4” (6cm) by 1.75” (4.5cm) and weighs 2.2g.
