Unusual 7” Bowie Bladed Knife with WW2 German SS/SA Dagger Style Grip by WHITBY Solingen Germany c1960
Here on offer is an unusual 7” bowie bladed knife with WW2 German SS/SA Dagger style grip by WHITBY Solingen Germany, circa 1960.
It has a sturdy 7” stainless steel bowie shaped blade with a 6.5” cutting edge. The only markings on the blade are the makers details, stamped on one side of the ricasso:
WHITBY
SOLINGEN
GERMANY
The blade is in great condition but there is now light pitting and greying to the finish.
The grip is made of a hard black plastic in the classic shape of those used on a WW2 German SS or SA dagger, which intern, are actually based upon the 16th-century Swiss Holbein dagger.
The upper and lower crossguard fittings and the sleaved tang nut, look to be made from nickel silver and are similar again to those used on the SS/SA daggers. I have checked and the tang nut is exactly the same as those used on period SS/SA daggers.
The grip and fittings are in near mint condition.
WHITBY have clearly asked a German maker based in Solingen to make this knife and I can only assume they have used some of the WW2 dagger mouldings and fittings to make the grip. It is almost a post WW2 “parts” knife!
I have taken the grip apart to look for a maker’s mark and found that the blade tang is stamped with 566 and what looks like 7”, but no maker’s mark/name.
There is no sheath with the knife.
The WHITBY brand has built a reputation for quality, and this knife embodies that legacy. Its solid construction and link to WW2 SS/SA daggers, makes this a fascinating collector’s knife.
The blade measures 7” (18cm) long with a 6.5” (16.5cm) cutting edge and the whole knife measures 12” (30.5cm) long.
It weighs 265g.
