Stunning Antique Mother of Pearl and Hallmarked Silver Pedestal Caviar Dish by Mappin & Webb 1923

Here on offer is a truly stunning antique mother of pearl and hallmarked silver pedestal caviar dish by Mappin & Webb, dated to 1923.

The beautiful polished natural mother of pearl shell or nacre shell dish, has been fitted to a sterling silver pedestal that has pleasing curved and raised edges crafted by the famous silversmith Mappin & Webb of London.

The pedestal has a set of English silver hallmarks, the Lion Passant for English silver (925), an anchor for the assay office of Birmingham and the date letter “y” for the year 1923.

It also shows the makers mark that are the letters “M&W”, that relates to the silversmith of Mappin & Webb.

Mappin & Webb started in 1775, when Jonathan Mappin opened a workshop in Sheffield. His mission was to create the most beautifully crafted silverware for British society.

The years that followed saw the company expand internationally, receiving Royal Warrants and commissions from Monarchs around the world, and becoming synonymous with excellence, craftsmanship and all things undeniably British.

The company continued to trade throughout both World Wars and its acclaimed Campaign watch, supplied to the Admiralty in 1914, played an integral role in the brand’s widespread popularisation during this time.
Mappin & Webb has been silversmiths to the United Kingdom’s sovereigns since 1897. Today they continue as Jewellers, Goldsmiths, and Silversmiths, to His Majesty The King.

The dish is in perfect condition with no damage to the beautifully coloured shell.

The dish measures 4.7” (11.8cm) by 2.75” (7cm) and is 2.4” (6cm) tall.

It weighs 110g.
