Antique Portuguese M1904 Sword Bayonet and Scabbard made by Simson & Co of Suhl Germany
Here on offer is an antique Portuguese M1904 sword bayonet and scabbard made by Simson & Co of Suhl Germany.
This Portuguese sword bayonet was designed to be used with the 6.5 mm M1904 Mauser-Vergueiro rifle.
M1904 bayonets have a shorter hilt compared to the M1908 and later Mauser bayonets, making them only suitable for use with the M1904 Mauser rifles.
The Portuguese M1904 rifles are believed to have been manufactured between the years 1904 to 1907 by DWM and the bayonets were made by Simson & Co., in Germany.
It is estimated that only around 75,000 of these bayonets were completed before Portugal faced financial constraints that hindered further production.
When the bayonets were original produced, they had a metal finish. The majority of them were later blued during rework.
This fine blued example has an 11” (28cm) single-edged blade with a sharp spear point and a flat spine and long single fuller. The blade is in excellent, near mint condition and retains nearly all the blued finish.
One side of the ricasso is stamped with the maker's details:
SIMSON & Co.
SUHL
The crossguard, muzzle ring and pommel retain their blueing with mild age related wear.
The crossguard is stamped with a small inspection mark “X” on the edge.
The pommel is stamped with the serial number J3140 and press-stud mechanism is in good working order.
The wooden grip scales are secured to the tang by two screw bolts. The scales are in great condition and just have some age and use related dings and wear.
The bayonet is complete with its blued steel scabbard which is in excellent condition, retaining most of its blued finish, with just some wear to the blueing were a frog has been fitted in the past.
This is just a fine and genuine example of this type of bayonet with a near mint blade.
The blade measures 11.1” (28.3cm) and the bayonet itself is 16” (40.6cm) long.
It weighs 500g.
