Unusual WW1 Period White China Ribbed Feeding Cup with Red Cross Society Emblem and Gilt Edging
Here on offer is an unusual version of a WW1 period white china “ribbed” feeding cup with a Red Cross Society emblem and gilt edging.
This feeding cup is made from white china with a teapot-like spout and half-enclosed opening on the top and small handle on the side adjacent to spout.
What makes this cup unusual is the ribbed design to the sides and spout, on most examples it has a smooth finish.
This cup was used to feed sick people who could not sit up upright. The one-handled hemispherical design is typical. The handle is placed on the right as the majority of people are right handed. This feeding cup was used by the Red Cross Society, which was founded in 1863 to give aid to those experiencing the effects of war.
This example was most likely made during WW1. The distinctive symbol of the Red Cross Society, which is staffed mostly by volunteers, is painted on the top of the cup. Gold edge painted detail and red cross on top.
This type of feeder, with the ribbed design, is hard to find and I could only find one example in the Science Museum.
There is no maker’s mark or details on this example.
It is in excellent/mint condition with no damage or repairs.
It measures 4.2” (10.5cm) diameter (excluding the handle and spout) by 3” (7.6cm) high and weighs 220g.
