Antique Victorian Pierced and Turned Bone Combination Dip Pen and Letter Opener c1880

Here on offer is a beautiful antique pierced and turned bone combination dip pen and letter opener, measuring 8.5” long, circa 1880.

The bone handle features fine pierced and turned detailing in the Dieppe style, typical of the Victorian era’s fascination with miniature craftsmanship.

Unscrewing the handle reveals a concealed gold plated dip pen nib that is held securely in place in a beautifully engraved steel section.

The very top of the handle is a hole that I believe would have originally held a tiny Stanhope viewer, but that is now missing, if one was ever fitted in the first place? This small end cap also unscrews, and has a cross hatched pattern on to top, that could possibly act as a wax seal for a letter, or even a pipe stamp?

This carved bone combination dip pen and letter opener is in excellent antique condition. The bone shows a smooth, even patina appropriate to its age, with just a tiny hairline crack at the base of the letter opener.

The screw threads on both the handle and end cap are intact and operate well. The pierced fretwork is crisp and complete, with no losses or distortion.

This is a practical yet elegant dual-purpose design from a time when every letter was written by hand.

It measures 8.5” (21.6cm) long, with a 3.5” (8.8cm) long letter opener blade section.

It weighs 21g.
