Mint French Laguiole G. DAVID Folding/Locking Knife with Wood Effect Display Case

Here on offer is a beautiful French Laguiole G. DAVID folding/locking knife with a 4” stainless steel blade and aluminium and translucent blue marble effect “Lucite” grip.

It comes with a wood effect display case with fascinating folding slatted split cover.

I actually bought this knife “new” on a visit to a quality knife shop in Spain, in the 1980’s.

It has a 4” stainless steel blade that can been swung open with the attached blade pin, which then locks it open against the thumb spring. To close it you just press the thumb spring down to release the blade and fold it closed.
On one side of the blade, it is etched with logo that looks like a crossbow and the name:

LAGUIOLE

Near the hinge it is stamped:

G. DAVID
440

440 is the grade of stainless steel used that is the highest grade of cutlery steel on the market. It contains more carbon, allowing for high edge retention when properly treated and it is capable of attaining one of the highest hardness ratings of any other steel on the Rockwell scale.

G. DAVID (today called Genes David) claims to be the oldest manufacturer of Laguiole-type knives. The company as it exists today goes back to 1922 and it seems that about a century before that, their founding family already made knives.

A less known fact is that David, situated in the city of Thiers, France has for a long period been the essential supplier of knife blanks to knife makers in the town of Laguiole - often small workshops where they added their own handle scales and such.

The modern 'Forge de Laguiole' is not a company with a long history where 'Laguioles are still being made'. In fact, for a while there has been a period when no knives at all were being produced in the town of Laguiole, until someone decided to set up the modern Forge de Laguiole to restart knife making activities there. Therefore, Forge de Laguiole is in fact pretty young, certainly compared to G. David and a few others who just continued to produce Laguiole-type knives in Thiers, the French knife-making capital.
Which means that if you are looking for a Laguiole made by a company with a truly long and uninterrupted history of making these knives, like G. DAVID, you need to buy from Thiers.

The vibrant grip is made from an almost translucent blue marble effect resin, like “Lucite”, that has been set into the polished smooth aluminium scales.

The spine shows chilled work and the traditional detailed bee, near the hinge.

It comes with a wood effect display case with a fascinating folding slatted split cover. It is constructed of a laminated hardboard material, that simply folds open at the top of the semi-circle cover, to reveal the knife strapped to a gold coloured felt base.

The knife is in truly mint unused condition, that has just been displayed in my personal collection since new.

The blade measures 4” (10.2cm) long with a 3.5” (8.8cm) cutting edge and the knife is 8.6” (22cm) in total length, when fully open.

With the case it weighs 343g.
