Here on offer is a large WW1 Bruce Bairnsfather 9” commemorative dish depicting a juggling grenades cartoon and the words “KEEPING HIS HAND IN?”.

Captain Charles Bruce Bairnsfather was a prominent British humourist and cartoonist. His best-known cartoon character is Old Bill. Bill and his pals Bert and Alf featured in Bairnsfather's "Fragments from France" cartoons published weekly in The Bystander magazine during WW1.

On the front the dish depicts a central cartoon in sepia tones, of Bert juggling grenades whilst standing on a box of hand grenades and the caption, “KEEPING HIS HAND IN?”.

Then around the inner edge are a selection of British and German helmets and a rat eating from a corn beef tin!

On the back it has a sepia image of “Old Bill” above which are the words:

The dish has a hairline crack at about 7 o’clock, when you look at the front, along with some age crazing to the glaze finish but retains the gilded finish to the rim.

It measures 9.1” (23cm) diameter, 2” (5cm) deep and weighs 450g.
