Large Commemorative Cast Aluminium Dish Depicting Prince of Wales - Edward VIII ‘Our Prince of Sports’ Made by R.W. Coan London c1920
Here on offer is a fine example of a rare sand cast aluminium dish depicting the Prince of Wales, later Edward VIII ‘Our Prince of Sports’, made by R.W. Coan of London, circa 1920.
There is an example of this dish in the V&A museum in London.
This commemorative dish is rectangular in shape with two handles. The rim and handles are decorated with elaborately moulded scrolls and leaves in a mock rococo style. The sides dip in a deep convoluted curve towards the base. The base is decorated with a portrait of the Prince of Wales in his Royal Navy uniform, smoking a cigarette.
The image of the Prince of Wales is likely taken from a photograph of him signing a visitor’s book during a trip to Canada in 1919, as shown in my last photo.
On the sides there are four medallions, two on each side, enclosing scenes showing the Prince of Wales playing polo, golf, tennis and show jumping.
Below the image are the words:
OUR PRINCE OF SPORTS
On the base it is impressed with the words:
PURE ALUMINIUM SAND CAST
