Vintage Red Bakelite 2.25” Square Dice shaped Thermometer by BLAVIA France c1930

Here on offer is a vintage red Bakelite 2.25” square dice shaped thermometer by BLAVIA, France, circa 1930.

This fine example has been made from a large 2.25” cube of red Bakelite, that has been shaped into a dice with rounded corners, like a real gaming dice.

Five sides of the dice are marked with white polka dots that correspond to the numbers between 1 and 5.

The sixth side has a circular gilt framed thermometer fitted on it, with a red dial hand. It measures temperatures with ranges in both Fahrenheit (F), -10F to 140F and Centigrade (C), -20C to 60C. It is unusual to find this type of dice thermometer, with both Fahrenheit and Centigrade scales?

The makers name, BLAVIA is also printed on the dial along with:

MODÈLE DÉPOSÉ (registered design)

MADE IN FRANCE


This dice is in full working order and although it is undated, it appears to be from the Art Deco period, circa 1930.

The clear cover seems to made from Lucite and is in excellent condition, with no cracks. There is some slight loss of gilt plating on the lower edge of the frame.
The dice itself is in excellent undamaged condition, with just some very light scratch marks.

It measures 2.25” (5.7cm) square and weighs a heavy 250g.
