Excellent WW2 British Indian 1907 Pattern Mk II* Bayonet by Rifle Factory Ishapore
Here on offer is an excellent example of a scarce WW2 British Indian 1907 Pattern Mk II* Bayonet made by Rifle factory Ishapore, dated to 1943.
This British Indian 1907 Pattern Mk. II* bayonet is an Indian-produced version of the British P1907 bayonet, designed for the Short Magazine Lee Enfield (SMLE) rifle. It was manufactured by the Rifle Factory Ishapore (RFI).
The blade, hilt and pommel retain all their original blued finish as do the throat and chape pieces of the scabbard.
This example has a mint condition blued 11.75” (30cm) straight, single-edged blade. Unlike earlier versions, the blade does not have a fuller and features a 2” false edge at the top.
On one side of the ricasso, it is stamped with the Tudor Crown and 'G.R.I' (George Rex Imperator, for George VI).
Below that it is marked, Mk II* that indicates the progression of modifications to the standard P1907 design, with the "II*" denoting a newly manufactured (not repurposed), unfullered blade with a false edge.
Then there is the date of manufacture being '2 43' for February 1943.
Finally, there is the manufacturer's mark 'R.F.I.' which stands for the Rifle Factory Ishapore in India.
On the other side of the ricasso, it is stamped with three Indian inspection marks.
The bayonet retains the standard P1907 hilt and wooden grips secured in place by two screws. One of the grip plates shows a group of small indentations, where it looks to have possibly been used as a hammer at some point in its life!
The pommel is the original beaked type with no markings. It has an oil hole and working release button.
The black leather scabbard, has a blued steel throat and chape and is still fitted with a khaki canvas frog with belt loop. On the back edge of the scabbard, by the stitching is a maker’s mark and date that is hard to make out but seems to be WGOC 1944, which I can’t identify?
Some historical facts about the Mk. II* bayonet.
The Mk. II* was a simplified, India-pattern version of the longer P1907 bayonet, designed to supplement the supply of bayonets for the SMLE rifles produced in India.
The earlier Mk. I versions involved shortening existing fullered blades, while the Mk. II models introduced newly manufactured, unfullered blades. The "star" (*) signified the addition of a false edge, a common practice for utility and close-quarters combat.
Post-War Service: Even after India's independence in 1947, these bayonets continued to be repaired and refurbished, with factory repairs being indicated by marks like 'FR' (Factory Repair).
This is really one of the finest examples I have had the pleasure to own.
The blade measures 11.75” (30cm) long and the bayonet in its scabbard, measures 17” (43.3cm) in total length.
It weighs 670g.
