Here on offer is fine Boer War commemorative bone china small cream jug depicting Field Marshal Sir George Stuart White and was made by R.H. & S.L. Plant S.A. Souvenir Ware, circa 1899.

The fine bone china sugar bowl has an embossed floral pattern and features on the front, the transfer photo image of Field Marshal Sir George Stuart White, surrounded by a Union Jack and Royal Navy flag, finished with enamel paint.

He was commander of the forces in Natal at the opening of the Second Boer War and fought at the Battle of Elandslaagte in October 1899. He commanded the garrison at the siege of Ladysmith: although instructed by General Sir Redvers Buller to surrender the garrison he responded "I hold Ladysmith for the Queen" and held out for another 75 days before being relieved in February 1900. He finished his career as Governor of Gibraltar and then as Governor of the Royal Hospital Chelsea.

The back of the jug reads "FOR QUEEN AND EMPIRE", set above a rose centred floral wreath.

The interior of the jug has the image of a painted a rifle and tasselled banner that reads "FOR FREEDOM AND EQUAL RIGHTS".

On the base it has the printed crowned and spread winged, maker’s mark and the maker’s name;

It is also over printed with an RD. No. 315120 in green ink, which relates to the design registration date of 1898/99.

The jug is in great condition with just two small hairline cracks at the rim that are only showing on the inner edge.

There is also some loss of gilt that was applied to the rim and couple of areas of rubbing to the transfer lettering under his image on the front.

The jug measures 2” (8.9cm) diameter at the top, excluding pouring lip and handle and is 2.8” (7.1cm) high.

It weighs 72g.
