Here on offer is fine Boer War commemorative bone china sugar bowl depicting General Sir Field Marshal Lord Roberts and was made by R.H. & S.L. Plant S.A. Souvenir Ware, circa 1899.
The fine bone china sugar bowl has an embossed floral pattern and features on the front, the transfer photo image of General Sir Field Marshal Lord Roberts, surrounded by a Union Jack and Royal Navy flag, finished with enamel paint.
Sir Field Marshal Lord Roberts (30th Sep, 1832 – 14th Nov, 1914) was the Commander-in-Chief of the British Forces in South Africa at the outbreak of the second Boer War in 1899.
The back of the bowl reads "FOR QUEEN AND EMPIRE", set above a rose centred floral wreath.
The interior of the cup has the image of a painted a rifle and tasselled banner that reads "FOR FREEDOM AND EQUAL RIGHTS".
On the base it has the printed crowned and spread winged, maker’s mark and the maker’s name;

S.A. SOUVENIR WARE
along with a blank Rd No. rectangle.
It is also over printed with an RD. No. 315120 in green ink, which relates to the design registration date of 1898/99.
The bowl is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or damage. There are few stain spots from manufacturing process and some slight loss of gilt that was applied to the rim. There are a couple of areas of rubbing to the transfer lettering under his image on the front.
The bowl measures 3.5” (8.9cm) diameter at the top and 2.1” (5.4cm) high.
It weighs 75g.
