Antique Double-Bladed Penknife with Smooth Horn Grip Scales made in Sheffield c1880

Here on offer is a fine antique double-bladed penknife with smooth horn grip scales made in Sheffield, circa 1880.

The penknife has two beautiful smooth horn grip scales that are in excellent condition. The grip actually tappers slightly from 0.5’ wide to 0.4” wide, from one end to the other.

Both slabs are held in place against steel liners and backbone by three brass pins.

The knife has two steel blades, that open and close as they should, one at each end.

There is no maker’s mark on the blades or knife, but the ricasso of each blade is now faintly stamped:

SHEFFIELD
ENGLAND

The longer blade retains a sharp edge and tip and shows some signs of age greying and pitting to its finish.

The shorter blade is possibly a quill sharpening blade and also retains a sharp edge and tip, but now shows some signs of sharpening and age greying/pitting to its finish.

The longer blade has a cutting edge of 1.5” (3.8cm) and the shorter blade 1.25” (3.2cm). Closed the grip measures 3.25” (8.3cm).

It weighs 31g.
