Large Bowie Knife with 10” Plain Steel Blade and English Oak Grip Scales
Here on offer is a large bowie knife with 10” clip point plain blade and English oak grip scales.
I have come across this type of knife a few times, some have a plain blade like this one, some are etched with “Remember the Alamo”. I do have an unusual one listed on my website, etched with the details of England’s world cup win in 1966.
The blades never seem to have a maker’s mark or name, but one did have a sheath stamped with BELL BOWIE MADE IN SHEFFIELD.
Therefore, it is possible the Belle Bowie Company made these knives in the 1960’s? Who knows!
This knife has a 10” steel clip point steel blade that has an 8.75” cutting edge. There are now signs of dark pitting over both sides of the flat blade surfaces. There are also signs of some crude sharpening/nibbles to the cutting edge, that could be removed by resharpening correctly.
The thick oval shaped finger/crossguard is made from polished brass and fits snuggly against the grip.
On this version, the grip is made up from two fine English oak slabs, with a smooth finish. They are some slight usage dents and dark staining around the steel rivets on one side.
They are securely held in place against the knife tang by three steel flat head rivets.
I believe this knife would have originally had a thick leather sheath, which sadly is no longer with it.
The knife has clearly been used, but is still in great condition and would make a great addition for any Bowie knife collector.
The blade measures 10” (25.4cm) long and the knife is 15.75” (40cm) in total length.
It weighs a heavy 615g.
