Large Original Bowie Knife by Wenoka of Japan with Embossed Eagle Head Leather Sheath c1960

Here on offer is a large size Original Bowie Knife made by Wenoka of Japan. with its original embossed eagle head leather sheath, circa 1960.

I believe Wenoka mostly made diving knives but this is one of their rare hunting knives.

The knife has an 8” steel blade that still holds a sharp cutting edge. There are now signs of light pitting on both sides of the flat blade surfaces. A small section (1.5”) of the upper edge of the blade near the tip has also been ground to a sharp edge, now the tip has a piercing point.

On one side of the blade, it is stamped with:

Original Bowie Knife

and near the crossguard with:

SCHUR, INC.
JAPAN
9078 (which I think is the model number)

On the other side it is stamped with the name Wenoka and their logo, an axe inside a shield.

The oval shaped finger/crossguard is made from polished brass and fits tightly against the leather grip spacers.

The grip is made up from two sections of moulded faux stag horn that is in excellent undamaged condition.

The smooth birds head shaped pommel is made from aluminium and is secured to the blade tang by a recessed brass screw at the top.

It retains its fine brown leather stitched sheath, with a fastening strap and stud at the top and two long strands of leather fitted at the bottom to enable it to be tied in place against the wearers leg.

What is unusual with this sheath is the embossed finely detailed eagles head, that still retains some colouring.

There is also a large belt loop at the top which is also fastened in place with a large metal stud.

The knife has clearly been used, but is still in excellent condition and would make a great addition to any Bowie knife collection.

The blade measures 8” (20.3cm) long and the knife is 12.4” (31.5cm) in total length.

With the scabbard, it weighs 400g.
