Fine Original German WW2 1939 Iron Cross 1st Class by ‘65’ Klein & Quenzer with Green Award Case

Here on offer is a fine example of an original German WW2 1939 Iron Cross 1st Class by Klein & Quenzer with its green award case.

My understanding is that in order to receive the Iron Cross 1st Class, Heer and Waffen SS men would have to perform three to four further acts of courage from the one that earned them the 2nd Class. The Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine had the following criteria; the award was regularly awarded to U-boat Commanders upon sinking 50,000 tons and to Luftwaffe pilots when they achieved six or seven confirmed kills. These were only guidelines and a single act of great importance or a long steady career could also earn the individual the Iron Cross 1st Class.

This minty example has a magnetic core and retains its original matt black painted finish to the centre, with just some tiny “spidering” under the swastika. It retains sharp detailing to the swastika and 1939 date.

There is now genuine age tarnishing to all the German silver fittings, that will clean off if required, but I prefer to leave that option to the next owner.

The reverse of the Cross is flat and fitted with a banjo pin that is stamped with the PKZ number “65” indicating it was made by the firm of Klein & Quenzer AG in Idar/Oberstein, Germany.

The block hinge and “C” catch are intact and un-repaired.

The award case has a green artificial leather outer covering with just some minor loss on one edge. There is an Iron Cross emblem impressed on the lid and the hinge and push button work perfectly. Inside the case, the cross rests on a tan flocked lining and it has a silk lining inside the lid.

This cased Iron Cross 1st Class is an excellent and well-preserved example of this iconic award, that will make a great addition to any collection.

It Iron Cross measures 1.73” (4.4cm) square and weighs 20g.

The green award case is 2.75” (7cm) square
