ERII Royal Navy Officer’s Sword by Wilkinson Sword with Scabbard and Dress Knot c1980
Here on offer is a excellent example of an ERII Royal Navy Officer’s Sword by Wilkinson Sword with scabbard and dress knot, circa 1980.
The beautiful 30.5” single edged fullered plain blade displays the “ERII” cypher along with oak leaf and anchor decoration and the famous Wilkinson Sword maker’s Royal appointment crest. The blade is in excellent condition with just some very minimal greying/surface pitting that would polish out.
On the top edge it is stamped with an unusual serial/reference number that is hard to make out, as it wasn’t struck very well, but seems to be: CTX011? This doesn’t seem to conform to the normal Wilkinson Sword serial number format which I understand is just made up of numbers?
It warrants further researching, but I think this example dates to the late 1970’s early 1980’s.
The beautiful anchor detailed gilt brass hilt guard and lion’s mask pommel retain nearly all of the original gilt finish, with just some loss to the top, edges and raised detailing.
The white fish skin grip is perfect, just slightly grubby, but that would easily clean off. All the grip wire is in place.
The folding guard section works perfectly and locates properly onto the top scabbard locket’s retaining pin as it should.
The gilt brass mounted leather scabbard is also in great condition, with some loss to the gilt fittings. There are a couple shallow indentations to the fittings and the middle fitting has the tiny edge screw missing, but is still held firmly in place.
The lower black leather section also has a light crease on the front towards the tip, but the whole scabbard remains very sound and usable.
The sword is fitted with a mint black and gold dress knot and the sword sheathes and draws very well.
I believe these swords can still be used by serving British, Australian, Canadian or New Zealand naval officers as well as making a great addition to a discerning collector that only buys the best.
With Wilkinson Sword now out of business yet so rightfully revered, this is a wonderful opportunity to give a newly commissioned officer something very special and yet sadly no longer available to buy from new. There is no officer’s name to the blade or folding guard.
The etched steel blade measures 30.5” (77.5cm) long and the whole sword (blade in scabbard) measures 39” (99cm).
It weighs a heavy 1.1Kg.
