George V Imperial Service Medal – ‘Coinage Head’ in Original Case - Named to - EDWARD JAMES CRAWLEY

Here on offer a very fine example of a George V ‘Coinage Head’ type, Imperial Service Medal in its original case and named to, WILLIAM HENRY MERRITT.

The Imperial Service Medal was instituted on 8 August 1902 to reward civil servants (on retirement) for at least 25 years of loyal and meritorious service to the Crown. Originally, the Order was a silver, seven-pointed star. In 1920, the design of the medal changed to a round pattern (32mm and struck in Silver), which bore the monarch’s head on the obverse and, on the reverse side, a design with a naked man reclining to depict well-earned rest with the words ‘For Faithful Service’. The ribbon design consists of two red stripes with a blue stripe in the centre. The name of the recipient is impressed on the rim of the medal and all recipients are listed in the London Gazette. In 1931 the obverse design changed from the ‘Coinage Head’ of George V to the ‘Crowned Head’ design,

As this medal depicts the ‘Coinage Head’ it must have been issued between 1920 and 1931.

The obverse bears the effigy of George V (without crown) and has the following inscription around the inner edge:

GEORGIVS V D. G. BRITT: OMN: REX F. D. IND: IMP:

The reverse depicts a finely sculptured male figure gazing out across the sea towards the setting sun, symbolising rest after labour, with the inscription;

FOR FAITHFUL SERVICE

The recipient's name can be found officially impressed in large capitals on the medal's rim.

This example was awarded to:

EDWARD JAMES CRAWLEY

The ribbon suspender is a silver ring attached to a fastening that surmounts the medal.

The ribbon itself is 38mm wide, red in colour with a central light blue stripe. It has a silver pin and clasp fixing stitched in place at the top.

The original case of issue has a black-pebbled leatherette exterior, with some gilt line finishing.

Inside it has a maroon velvet recessed medal bed and silk lid lining.

This example is in very fine condition, with just some very light surface scratches.

The solid silver medal measures 1.26” (3.2cm) diameter and weighs 29g with the ribbon.
