Antique Folding Lock-Back Knife with Stag Antler Grip by W.H. WRAGG Sheffield circa 1880

Here on offer is an example of an antique folding lock-back knife with stag antler grip plates, by W.H. WRAGG Sheffield, circa 1880.

It has a single 3.5” steel clip point blade shows signs of sharpening, but retains a good cutting edge with no visible knicks. It is set with a nail pull on one side to help it to be pulled open. The straight blade, now has a slight curvature, as shown in my photo, but locks securely in place when opened, with just a slight side to side wobble. The blade now has a lot of dark ageing to the finish, some of which may polish off with a metal cleaner.

On one side of the ricasso is stamped:

W.H. WRAGG
SHEFFIELD
ENGLAND

To close the blade, you just push down on the semi-circular steel latch on the top edge of the grip, which releases the catch and it can be folded closed.

The grip scales are made from fine rigged stag antler, that is still in excellent condition and has been narrowed and shaped to fit into the polished brass bolster. They are pinned securely in place, to the brass liners by five metal pins on both sides. On one side it has a shield shaped brass blank cartouche pinned in place and at the end is a steel lanyard loop.

It is becoming hard to these antique knives in such good condition, especially with these beautiful stag grip scales.

The blade measures 3.6” (9.1cm) long with a cutting edge of 3.25” (8.2cm) and the knife itself is a total of 8.75” (22.2cm) long including the lanyard loop.

It weighs 97g.
