Original WW1 Period “THE METROPOLITAN” Birmingham City Police Whistle by J. Hudson & Co of 244 Barr Street
Here on offer is an original WW1 period “THE METROPOLITAN” Birmingham City Police whistle by J. Hudson & Co of 244 Barr Street, Birmingham, still with its original metal chain and hook.
The nickel silver metal whistle and chain are in excellent undamaged condition.
The front is stamped with the following details:
THE METROPOLITAN
PATENT
BIRMINGHAM
CITY POLICE
J. HUDSON & CO.
244. BARR Street
BIRMINGHAM
Now my understanding is that when the word 'PATENT' is presented/stamped straight and there is a full stop after the '244' on the address, it dates this whistle to between 1914-19, the Great War period.
The metal shows some tarnishing and the strap has some age wear, but no splits or repairs.
The whistle measures 3.25” (8.3cm) long to the top of the ring and 0.7” (1.7cm) diameter.
The metal chain and hook measures 13.5” (34.3cm) long, end to end.
It weighs 60g with the chain.
