Rare Antique Stag Handled Hawksbill Folding Knife by NEEDHAM Hill Street Sheffield circa 1880
Here on offer is an example of a rare antique stag handled “Hawksbill” folding knife, by NEEDHAM, Hill Street, Sheffield, circa 1880.
The knife is in excellent condition still with its impressive curved blade, that retains a sharp edge. There is some aged “greying” and very light pitting to the blade finish, but I think this would clean up to a brighter finish, if that was preferred?
On one side of the ricasso is stamped:
NEEDHAM
HILL STREET
SHEFFIELD
The knife has two near perfect slices of stag horn that have been shaped to form the tight fit of the grip to the blade tang and polished brass bolster. It is unusual to find the grip slabs in such perfect condition, no cracks or splits. All four steel retaining pins remain firmly in place.
It also still has a very strong spring and locking action.
This is probably the best example of an antique Hawksbill knife that I have had the pleasure to own.
They are just impossible to find in such good condition, especially with these beautiful stag grip slabs.
The blade measures 3” (7.7cm) long and the knife itself is a total of 7.25” (18.4cm) long when fully open.
It weighs 92g.
