Rare Novelty Art Deco Streamlined Classic Car Shaped Green Bakelite Penknife by Richards of Sheffield c1930

Here on offer is a rare novelty Art Deco streamlined classic car shaped green Bakelite penknife by Richards of Sheffield c1930.

I have only seen one other example of this type of penknife in all my collecting years and that was made from red painted tin.

Therefore, what is really unusual about this example, is the fact the grip is made from two plates of light green Bakelite, which is a rare colour to find.
The plates have been moulded in green Bakelite to produce the detailed image of an Art Deco period streamlined classic car, that even depicts a chauffeur with a hat, driving it.

The plates are held in place against the steel liner, by two steel pins, one of which also secures a swivel steel loop, allowing it to be attached to a clip or hung from a keyring.

The 1.1” single edged blade is made from stainless steel and has the maker’s details stamped on one side of the ricasso, along with the famous ‘Lamp Post’ logo:

Richards
SHEFFIELD
ENGLAND

Now it appears that Richards of Sheffield is of German origin. The company Richartz started around 1900 in Solingen. It was members of the Richartz family, Stephan and Wilhelm Mueller (1932) joined by Paul (1937), that started the company that became Richards in Sheffield. The name was changed just before the war from Richartz to Richards. They brought the lamp post trademark with them.

This knife has seen very light use with the blade retaining its bright finish and a good cutting edge. It is also still stiff to open and close and may benefit from a light oiling.

It is a scarce penknife to find in such excellent condition and with the rarity of being a green Bakelite version, will make a wonderful addition to any penknife collection.

The blade measures 1.1” (2.3cm) long and the whole knife when open measures 3.5” (8.8cm) including the loop.

It weighs 9g.
