Rare Austrian Table Striker or Lighter in the form of Dick Turpin on a Horse c1930

Here on offer is a rare Austrian table striker or lighter in the form of Dick Turpin astride a horse, circa 1930.

This impressive and heavy figure has been cast in a white metal most likely spelter.

It has very fine detailing and has been beautifully hand painted in a rich palette of autumn colours.

This particular model has delicate and vulnerable parts such as the pistol and horse’s reins which would often be damaged or missing.

In this case everything is complete and the original cold painted enamel finish is in great condition, but now displays some chipping as can been seen in my photos.

This is really a novelty table striker, modelled on the infamous figure of the highway man, Dick Turpin sat astride a horse, which had it been painted black, could have been Black Bess!

The striker is housed in between his coat tails which can easily be removed for use. It would have been filled with lighter fuel and struck down the small steel channel just below his elbow, producing a spark and igniting the striker.

The figure is mounted onto a polished wooden plinth with its original green baize, that is stamped with the words:

MADE IN
AUSTRIA

The striker is typical of the decorated metal moulded objects manufactured in Austria during the 1930’s.

This is a great opportunity to obtain a rare and unusual piece of collectable Tobacciana.

It measures 9" (22.8cm) high, 10" (25.3cm) wide and 4” (10.2cm) deep.

It weighs a heavy 1.8Kg.
