Ornate Boer War Commemorative Combined Double Bladed Penknife and Corkscrew – Kruger and De Wet with BROKEN SPRING

Here on offer is a Boer War commemorative combined double bladed penknife and corkscrew that depicts the images of Kruger and De Wet.

My understanding is that these commemorative souvenir knives were all made in Germany after the Boer War ended and were exported to South Africa, circa 1905.

Unfortunately, the penknife now has a broken spring bar that means although both knives open and close, they no longer lock firmly into place, meaning they “wobble”.

The corkscrew however is still stiff to open and locks in place so remains useable.

As you can see from my photos the knife still displays very well, when opened of closed.

It has very detailed pressed polished white metal scales either side, showing on one the Transvaal and Orange Free State coats of arms along with the motto “Eendracht maakt Macht” which means Unity makes Strength. On the other side are the images of Stephanus ‘Paul’ Kruger and Christiaan De Wet, separated by their two flags and trophies.

The steel blades are in great condition and show minor pitting/staining to the finish. The larger blade also has the makers logo stamped on the ricasso that looks like two crossed spanners?

The larger blade measures 2.5” (6.3cm) long and the smaller blade is 1.6” (4cm). Closed the knife measures 3.6” (9.2cm) long and it weighs 44g.

Please see my pictures for the details of the condition, which complement this description.
